Ogun PDP Slams Abiodun Over Ultimatum To Petty Traders, Charges Govt To Provide Alternatives

The Ogun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has noted a disturbing ultimatum issued by the Dapo Abiodun-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government against helpless traders plying their wares in the streets.

In a fresh clamdown of draconian cocktails of anti-people measures by the Abiodun government, as widely reported in the news, the petty traders, who have been forced to the streets, are being threatened to quit within three days!

While we do not, in all honesty, make case for or justify street trading in any guise or disguise, but as a responsible political organisation, 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘥𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨.

It would be recalled that since the inception of this embarrassment masquerading as government, we have repeatedly called the attention of all relevant stakeholders and other men of good conscience to the deplorable state of facilities in all major markets across Ogun State. Perhaps, the government has forgotten that, since its inception, it has been consciously sleeping on its duties, despite our several warnings and advice that the government should maintain market infrastructure and build more low-cost structures in our markets but Dapo Abiodun-led government prefers to collect daily levies, tax and silly dues which can not be accounted for from the same traders he’s laying off.

Currently, the roof of the Oba Lipede Shopping Complex at the popular Kuto market has been blown off for more than 2 months now. The lead road that enters the popular Oba T. T. Dada market in Ota, just as others in Sagamu and other places has become impassable, while trading around the Kayero market in Sango is a complete nightmare.

Instead of threatening innocent traders with a leave order, the government should have heeded the voice of wisdom by providing alternative arrangements for the traders before now. That is the only way the desired aesthetic environmental beauty and orderliness can be achieved.

If Mr Abiodun and his gang of incompetent men are not dwelling in infantile arrogance and pride, the fumbling APC government is expected, before issuing any ultimatum, to understudy the archival records of the state and find out how the PDP government relocated residents, after their buildings were affected during the expansion of Abeokuta-Kobape-Siun- Sagamu Interchange from two lanes to four-way express lanes.

The then PDP government provided alternatives; brand new homes were built, electrified and allocated to affected families before the (marked) original houses were demolished to give way to the new expressway.

The journey of that administration has turned out to be a huge industrial assets in Ogun State today.

It is however heartbreaking that since the ultimatum was issued yesterday, the talking point in many homes and offices; both public and private across the State is the flight of emotionally intelligent, responsive and compassionate government from the State.

The PDP, therefore, urges Mr Abiodun and his officials to desist from punishing helpless traders because they formed part of the army of electorates who rejected him and his sinking APC during the last governorship election.

Instead, the government must ease the traders’ existential pains and suffocation under the weight of the unpardonable insensitivity of the passing regime.
