2023: Is Osinbajo A Star Boy? Adedara Oduguwa Ph.D

Published

I have heard a lot of people talk about Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as a better replacement to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari come 2023.

For me, while I respect the intellectual prowess of the Prof. of Law, I totally disagree with this school of thought. In addition, to make my view more empirical rather than one developed out of sentiment or sheer hatred, I have provided a logical background to my view of the VP and that of Gen. Buhari.

The essence of this article is to expose those elites, especially some Nigerians in diaspora who are clamouring for a president in the Professor of Law, that he’s not only incompetent to govern Nigeria, but would not fit into the structural political landscape that’s presently in use.

Between 1960 and January 15th 1966, there was no such thing as office of the Vice-President. The independent constitution, provided for office of the Prime Minister and the President.

In this parliamentary constitution, the president (Dr. Azikiwe) performs only ceremonial functions while real executive power lies with the Prime Minister (gentleman, Balewa).

By the time the military took over in January 15th, 1966, The Federal Executive Council headed by General J.T.U Aguiyi Ironsi provided the official office of Vice President. And picked General Babafemi Ogundipe (the Ago-Iwoye born) as VP ( was referred to as second in command and First Chief of Staff of the Supreme Military Council). This officially created a foundation for the VP post and an interlude to Presidential system of government.

By July 29th, 1966, General Yakubu Gowon has succeeded Ironsi and Ogundipe, he announced a new VP in Joseph Edet A. Wey, a Nigerian Navy Admiral. His mother was from Lagos while his father was from Akwa-Ibom.

Further in July 29th, 1975, the military under the leadership of Brigadier General Muritala Muhammed struck and ended Gen. Gowon’s long term rule. Muritala appointed the Owu-born General, Olusegun Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo as VP.

After Muritala was fatally murdered by Col. Dimka et al., in another unsuccessful coup, General Olusegun Obasanjo became the new Head of State in Feb.13, 1976 and appointed Major General Shehu Musa Yar’dua as VP. It was the duo that transited power back to the civilians as promised by their leader, Brigadier General Muritala Muhammed.

By 1978, ban on political activities was lifted by Obasanjo and by 1979, Alhaji Shehu Shagari was installed as the new civilian president after the presidential election. The grade II teacher picked Chief Dr Alex Ekwueme as VP. They reigned between October 1st 1979 and Dec. 31st 1983.When Gen. Buhari Muhammadu forcefully truncated the second republic through a coup.

Gen. Buhari brought in General Babatunde Abdulbaki Idiagbon, the Ilorin born intelligentsia and unblemished servant as second in command (VP). They ruled between Dec. 31st 1983 to 27th August, 1985. Idiagbon later died in 1999.

By 27th of August 1985, Gen. Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babaginda has succeeded in forcefully taken over power from Gen. Buhari, this was in the absence of Gen. Idiagbon who had traveled for Hajj. Babangida had accused Buhari/Idiagbon of massive corruption and abuse use of power. And for the new regime, picked Ebitu Ukiwe, a Commodore in the Nigerian Navy born in Abuja State. The duo ruled between 27th of August 1985 and October 17th, 1986 when Gen. Babaginda (popular called Maradona) removed him after opposing Babangida’s decision to join the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. A new VP was found in Augustus Aikhomu, an Admiral in the Nigerian Navy. Their tenure ended in 26th August 1993 when Gen. Babaginda resigned.

Between 26 August 1993 – 17 November 1993, an interim government was imposed on Nigeria by Gen. Babangida after the annulment of June 12 1993 Presidential election that saw Chief Moshood Kasimawo Olawale Abiola victorious.

From Abiola’s community in Abeokuta, Babangida picked Chief Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan as the interim President. For him, he didn’t have a VP even though he announced MKO Abiola as VP.

Then, the most dreaded of all, Gen. Sani Abacha waded in and took over the mantle of leadership in another palace coup. Chief Shonekan was officially removed in Nov. 17th 1993. The new military government would have Gen. Donaldson Oladipo Diya, the Ijebu Odogbolu born as VP. Abacha was the first Nigerian Army officer to attain the rank of a full military general without skipping a single rank. Abacha died in office , June 8, 1998 while waiting for Diya’s head.

As a result of the sudden unexpected death of the Kano born President, a new leader emerged in General Abdulsalami Abubakar and brought in Okhai Michael Akhigbe who was a Vice Admiral of the Nigerian Navy. They both ruled between June 8, 1998 to May 29, 1999.

Between May 29th, 1999 to May 29th 2007, Chief (Dr.) Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar ruled as civilian president and Vice-President respectively. Atiku Abubakar the Adamawa Born custom officer single-handedly stopped Chief Obasanjo’s third term bid in 2007, a reason Obasanjo detest him today.

Between May 29, 2007 and May 5, 2010, the good men, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Ebele Jonathan ruled Nigeria as President and Vice after succeeded in winning the 2007 Presidential election under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). President Yar’Adua couldn’t govern in peace as a result of unstable health. He eventually died in office, which paved way for his deputy (Jonathan).

Between May 29, 2010 and May 29, 2015, Architect Alh. Namadi Sabo was President Jonathan’s Vice-President. They were both defeated in the general elections of 2015. Which brought back Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to power.

Since first elected in 2015, Gen. Buhari’s regime has the Prof. Of Law, Yemi Osinbajo as vice.

Looking at this long historical changes in leadership in our political garment, you would agree with me that only Buhari had VPs more powerful, competent and known than himself. Perhaps, many of my readers would be hearing for the first time name of some VPs mentioned above for the first instance.

What is that telling us, it’s saying President Buhari should in any sane society not have anything to do with governance. As powerful as some VPs in the past were, they couldn’t overshadow their Presidents.

Now, how can we compare anyone with a Buhari and think the person should be better? Personally, and this is my opinion, I believe a Kingsley Moghalu is far better, perhaps have more political pedigree, structure, and economic sense, than the Prof. Of Law, who has been in charge of our economy in recent past years.

Why? Prof. Osinbajo doesn’t even has any political structure in Ikenne, Ogun State or his Banana Island house. With 774 Local Governments, 37 provinces (including Abuja), over 11,000 wards, 176,846 polling units, 90milliom Muslims (80 million Christians), and over 120 million Northerners. So, those nurturing this thoughts for him are day-dreaming.

More so, a Buhari would find it very difficult to trust an Osinbajo for the aforementioned, yet obvious reasons.

Let’s say Osinbajo was paired with an Obasanjo, Babaginda, Jonathan and or an Ironsi , no one would have noticed the ‘star boy status’ in him. He became a celebrity under a government of mediocrity, nepotism with khakistorial tendencies.

Finally, I don’t want a Sourthern President imposed on us by the North. I want the South to present a president for themselves. The few elites can continue to campaign for the VP on Facebook and other social media platforms, we know who the voters are. They are not on Facebook. And Osinbajo for me is not a star-boy!
