Nigerians React As N15 Billion Residence Budget Justified By Shettima, Cites Peter Obi’s Post-Election Trauma (Details)
Vice President Kashim Shettima has addressed recent criticisms from Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. Responding to Obi’s comments about the government’s plan to spend N15 billion on renovating the Vice President’s residences, Stanley Nkwocha, the spokesperson for Vice President Shettima, defended the administration’s decision.
Obi had questioned the large budget for renovating the residences compared to the allocated N5 billion for student loans. In a statement released on behalf of Vice President Shettima, Nkwocha denounced what he described as misguided attacks and falsehoods directed at the administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Nkwocha challenged Obi’s criticisms and clarified that the renovation project was initiated and funded during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. He noted that the current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, renewed the project due to its prolonged abandonment.
The spokesperson defended the decision to resume the project, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to completing long-abandoned public projects nationwide. He contrasted this stance with Obi’s past directives as governor of Anambra State.

Nkwocha disputed Obi’s comparison between the budget for the Vice President’s residence and university professors’ salaries. He asserted that despite challenging economic conditions, the administration prioritizes the welfare of educators and educational infrastructure.
Accusing Obi of post-election trauma and divisive rhetoric, Nkwocha urged him and others in the opposition to accept defeat gracefully and prioritize Nigeria’s interests. The statement emphasized the need for unity and moving forward beyond religious and ethnic politicking.
Nkwocha concluded by advising Obi and his fellow opposition members to put the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians first as patriotic citizens.
