The Niger State Police Command has confirmed that it stopped a pro-Tinubu rally in the state’s Borgu Local Government Area.

According to the PR officer of the state command, Wasiu Abiodun, who spoke to our correspondent by telephone on Tuesday, the command received information that trouble was coming, so they nipped it in the bud.

He added that it was a proactive measure to prevent a security breach in the community.

“Police took over the site of the planned meeting as a proactive measure due to information received about a likely security breach at the site.

“That is why we had to do what was necessary to avert any possible attack or hijacking by suspected miscreants to cause chaos and violation of the peace in the community,” Abiodun added.

The rally tagged “Grand Lockdown” was designed to garner support for All Progressives Congress presidential nominee Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima.

One of the Tinubu/Shettima supporters, Usman Shehu, stated: “The rally was supposed to take place at Borgu Township Stadium at 11am on Tuesday, only for supporters arriving at the venue to realize that the police have taken over the venue and the surrounding area .

“We had already agreed on everything we needed for the rally. We had done our decorations, sound checks and everything needed to hold the rally.

“Only for us to come early this morning to find the police barricaded the venue and they told us to go back because the rally wouldn’t hold.”
