The Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission has stated that the
several changes have taken place in the socio-economic indicators and other variables in the country have called for a review of the pay of civil servants in Nigeria.

The committee also said that the ongoing effort to review the pay package was aimed at closing the gap in salary inequality between them across the country.

The Chairman of the Commission, Muhammed Shehu, made this statement in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, during the opening of a one-day public hearing in the southwest of the state on the review of the remuneration package for the political, public and judicial office holders in the country.

The program was organized by the committee.

Represented by a member of the committee, Tokunbo Ajasin, the chairman named the officials who would benefit from the revision package, including the president, vice president, governors, vice governors, ministers, commissioners, special advisers, legislators and the holders of the offices referred to in Articles 84 and 124 of these Articles of Association.

However, Bello noted that the revision did not necessarily mean that beneficiaries’ pay would be increased, but explained that the exercise would be fair and equitable.

He said, “Allow me to clarify the impression in the minds of the majority of the Nigerian general public about this assessment exercise. Many believe that the review will increase the salaries and allowances of political and public office holders.

“By definition, review refers to an act of inquiry, or the state of being examined. Corresponding. the commission is examining the existing pay package for political, public and judicial office holders in the country in light of public outcry and the changing realities in the economy.

“May I therefore assure the Nigerian public that this review will be fair, just and equitable in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).”
