Speaking in a recent YouTube interview with popular Journalist, Biola Orisile of Abiola Orisile Events And Parties, K1 retraced the journey of how he met Tinubu on Lagos Island as a young boy. When the question was posed pointedly to him that, “how did K1 meet Asiwaju Bola Tinubu?” Here are K1’s exact words while answering the question: “That’s a big one. Well, talking about Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I met him when I was a little boy at Agarawu (on Lagos Island). My mother is a textile merchant. And she was selling clothes at Mosalasi Jimoh in Agarawu. She used to be at Ereko before she finally moved to Mosalasi Jimoh. And my mother was amongst the first set of people that associated with Alhaja Abibat Mogaji who happened to be the mother of Asiwaju Tinubu. And from there I got to know him,” K1 revealed.
And shedding more light on how their bonding began, the King of Fuji said: “At that time, I used to go everywhere with my mum, and like a junior one knowing a senior one, every time we found ourselves (him and Tinubu) then, we would spend many hours with mama Abibat Mogaji and my mother because they were very, very close too. And my mother happened to be the first clothes seller that set up a kiosk, before a shop, to be selling clothes at Mosalasi Jimoh behind the Central Mosque in Lagos. So, may be, due to her closeness to Alhaja Abibat Mogaji, she established that market, Owolowo Market, and that is where I grew to know Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu before he travelled out.”
Speaking further, K1 added that, “I used to run errands for him before he travelled out. I would be the one to fetch charcoal to do his ironing, you know, I would put the charcoal in the iron to do the ironing, and stuffs like that for him as a young man, before he eventually travelled out. So, he knew me very, very well as a young boy. And he is a father figure to me. He is a father figure who thought me many things about the rudiments of life. He thought me many things, and he appreciates many goodness that you can demonstrate. So, he would appreciate you and accord you respect for such thing. And that is how I got to know Asiwaju Tinubu like your question inquired.”
And when K1 was asked how their bond now became so unbreakable, he asserted that, “the bond has always been like that. And there is no way you get to know someone like that way back then, that there won’t be any bond. Even, as at the time he travelled out and he came back. Or, I travelled out to later met him abroad, he was so happy to say that, that little boy of then, oh! You are here. And you are doing well for yourself. He is someone that appreciates every good effort you make unto yourself. And what you do to develop others and the society. That is a kind of person Asiwaju Tinubu is. And like I said, he is a father figure.”
And, apparently, to shed more light on why he kept describing Tinubu as a father figure, K1 said: “I don’t relate to him like a brother. He is never my brother. He is my father. I don’t see him like my brother because, someone that has a lot to give to you, that you have a lot to learn from, you don’t regard such a person as your brother. You know, it is so very disrespectful to be considering such a person your brother. He is never my brother, he is a father figure, and he has been on that note, and the relationship between us has been like that of father and son,” K1 submitted.
And this big question was also posed to to K1 to put him on the spot. “Why is K1 campaigning openly for Tinubu?” This is how he answered: “You would campaign openly for someone that you know very well. The best you could do for a good man, I mean a good man you met, you lived with, you understand a lot about, and who has done so many things that you can never forget is to stand with him all through. And something that is worth mentioning here is that, if I close my eyes, open it, close it, open it, I will keep remembering what this man called Asiwaju has done in my life, and in other people’s lives. He is someone that would never shut his eyes when he sees good things in you. This is not about campaigning, it is about the make up of the man.
“So, Asiwaju, before he became Asiwaju I knew him. Before he became Jagaban, I knew him, he knew me. He knew me when I was growing up. He is one of the early senior people in the community that really encouraged me to keep doing what I’m doing, because they saw a brighter future ahead of me. And not like people that don’t know anything, that probably out of just hate, or out of jealousy, would feel like what you are doing, you are disturbing them. Such prople can discourage you from doing that thing. No, he never did. We both grew up in Agarawu, and this is an area where there is life. Agarawu from Thursday rocked till Monday morning, because that is the centre of, you know, Nnamdi Azikiwe is the centre of social activities. You see parties going from Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and everywhere is bubbling. So, we were used to that.
“So, that is the kind of man Asiwaju is, and this is a man I grew up to know up till the time the opportunity came to him to be what he is. So, if people are saying I came out openly to campaign for him, I’m sorry that I have no other thing to do than just what I’m doing. Because, it’s been so long that I have known this man. The relationship between me and Asiwaju has dated over 50 years, yes, almost 53 years now. I have known him for a very long time.” K1 concluded.
