VIDEO: Death toll rises in Peshawar mosque bombing
A suicide bombing that occurred at a mosque in a police and government compound in northwest Pakistan reflects “security concerns,” current and former officials said, as the death toll from the devastating blast rose to 100 on Tuesday.
The blast, which ripped through a Sunni mosque in a major police facility in the city of Peshawar, was one of the deadliest attacks on Pakistani security forces in recent years.
It left as many as 225 injured, some still in serious condition in hospital, according to Kashif Aftab Abbasi, a senior officer in Peshawar.
The explosion blew off part of the roof and what remained quickly collapsed, injuring many more, according to Zafar Khan, a police officer. Rescue workers had to remove mountains of rubble to reach the believers still trapped under the rubble.
According to Mohammad Asim, a spokesman for the government hospital in Peshawar, more bodies were recovered overnight and early Tuesday and several of the seriously injured have died. “Most of them were police officers,” Asim said of the victims.
Bilal Faizi, the chief rescue officer, said rescue teams were still working at the site on Tuesday as more people are believed to be trapped.
Mourners buried the victims in various cemeteries in the city and elsewhere.
