US airlines are canceling more than 1,000 flights
More than 1,000 flights were reportedly canceled in the United States on Monday, with more to be canceled on Tuesday.
The cancellations are being attributed to a severe winter storm.
As of 6 p.m. ET on Monday, a total of 1,019 flights have been canceled, according to flight tracking service FlightAware. About 4,100 flights were delayed.
Southwest Airlines saw the most cancellations, cutting about 12 percent of its schedule — about 483 flights.
797 flights to or from the United States are scheduled for Tuesday.
The National Weather Service had said Monday morning that a “prolonged and potentially significant ice build-up” would affect much of the United States, from the southern plains to the Tennessee Valley, according to its website.
While the Department of Transportation requires airlines to issue refunds to travelers whose flights have been canceled, affected airlines have issued waivers as winter weather approaches, according to a report by USA today. A waiver allows customers to change their itinerary without fare differences if they stay in the same cabin as originally booked.
Southwest Airlines faced a backlash from the US government earlier this month for canceling 16,700 flights over the holiday season due to inclement weather and outdated technology.
The new cancellations come a few weeks after the U.S. airline industry recovered from a nationwide ground halt imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration over a technical issue.
