The vice-chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole SAN, has said that the institution will not halt its academic activities during the upcoming general election.

However, he clarified that students and staff would not be disenfranchised as the university had designed a program “where students can attend virtual classes and vote wherever they are.”

“We will not suspend our readings to vote, Unilorin has been digitized,” he added.

The VC also said that university management designed the school’s academic programs to ensure that all lost academic calendars for the 8-month strike begun by the Academic Staff Union of Universities are recovered by October, while a new academic session will start in August 2023. .

Egbewole made this known while answering questions from journalists during his first media call on Wednesday.

He said that in the last 100 days of his assumption as vice-chancellor, the university under his regime had attracted N500 TETFund grants for hostel accommodation for its students, another N400 million for broadband from the ministry of communications and N200 million grant for IT.

Similarly, the VC said some staff at the school have also attracted N100 million grants through their research work for the university, adding that the university has “patented 18-20 products of its research work”.

Egbewole also announced plans by the university under his administration to complete the long-started Tanke-UNILORIN rail system to alleviate the transportation problems faced by the students.

He stressed that the university is “hiring the Embassy of China” to handle the project which he said was started about 10-15 years ago.

In addition, the VC said the university was planning a “micro-level electric bus transportation system” under his administration to ensure students have a smooth ride.
