The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, has ordered the institution’s medical board to conduct an urgent and thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of a student.

The deceased, Miss Precious Agini, was a third-year student of the Library and Information Science Department, who passed away on Saturday, January 28, at the institution’s Medical Center.

The order to investigate is in a statement signed on Sunday in Calabar University’s Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe.

Egbe said the VC and the entire institution valued the lives of students and was devastated by the painful loss reported at the institution’s Medical Center.

“The Medical Council will investigate the circumstances surrounding the admission of the deceased to the University Medical Center.

“The Medical Board must also determine whether the death could have been prevented and examine the role that individual Medical Center staff play in treating the patient.

“The council is also expected to establish the veracity of allegations of carelessness or dereliction of duty among hospital staff in the treatment of the patient and advise management on how to prevent a recurrence of similar situations in the future.

“The board’s report is expected to reach the VC on or before February 2, 2023,” Egbe said.
