UNIBEN teacher petitions IGP for alleged unlawful detention

Ishaq SD Osagie-Eweka, lecturer at the University of Benin, Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Life Sciences, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba to urge him to release his alleged unlawful arrest and detention by to investigate the Edo State Commissioner. Police, Muhammed Dankwara.

The aggrieved lecturer also gave the state police commissioner, Dankwara, 48 hours to tell the public the reason why he was arrested and paraded in front of the public like a common criminal.

Osagie-Eweka based his petition titled, “The Improper Conduct, Abuse and Misuse of Office by CP Mohammed Dankwara, of the Edo State Police Command and the Unlawful and Unconstitutional Arrest,” through his counsel, B. A Iluobe, Esq . and addressed to the Executive Secretary, National Commissioner for Human Rights, which was also made available to our correspondent in Benin City.

According to Iluobe, “My client Ishaq SD Osagie-Eweka was arrested at a car wash in Benin City, where he had gone to show his friends a letter asking for a rightful meeting.

“My client said that he was invited by a friend, Osazuwa Osakpolor, to help him take a cursory look at some documents for further transmission to the
Police Commissioner (CP), Edo State”.

Counsel claimed that his client told him that the contents of the documents include; a letter addressed to the CP requesting approval for lawful gathering, a copy of their organization’s Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration document, a copy of the organization’s bylaws; among other things for the attention of the CP.

He said his client was surprisingly attacked by police on the alleged direction of the police commissioner, taken to his house where they ransacked everywhere and later paraded him in front of the media.

He further claimed that the police commissioner’s actions violated his client’s fundamental human rights

“If no element linking our client and others to crime was found in our client’s home, what is the reason for his arrest, unlawful detention; parade in front of the press; subsequent court action?

“CP Mohammed Adamu Dankwara of Edo Police Command must disclose the petitioner(s) and the offense(s) committed to the Nigerians.

“CP Mohammed Adamu Dankwara of Edo Police Command should disclose to Nigerians the reason(s) for the despicable and unprofessional behavior that has violated our client’s character and violation of his basic human rights as a Nigerian.

“CP Mohammed Adamu Dankwara of Edo Police Command should reveal to Nigerians who paid him to carry out this unthinkable act of corrupt tendencies.

“Nigerian police are given 48 hours from the date of receipt of this petition by this petition to address or take legal action against the abusive and unprofessional conduct of CP Mohammed Adamu Dankwara against the person of our client,” he said.

When contacted, the Edo State Police spokesman said he was unaware of the petition but promised to come back to Onze Correspondent.
