Students from the University of Benin clashed with some soldiers on school grounds on Thursday over cash withdrawals at one of the bank’s ATMs.

The trouble was said to have started when attempts to jump ahead of the line by the soldiers were met with stiff resistance from the students who had patiently waited in line for their turn.

According to a source, the students were angry with the soldiers of the S&T barracks who had done the same in an oppressive manner on Wednesday.

The source stated: “On Wednesday they came here and harassed the students. They even asked the students who challenged them to lie down on the floor. But when they came again today (Thursday) and wanted to do the same thing, the student resisted.”

While an argument broke out between the students and the military, the chief security officer of the institution who intervened was allegedly attacked by the soldiers.

The development put students at a disadvantage and blocked vehicular traffic on routes to and from the school, resulting in a traffic jam.

It took the intervention of some feisty Nigerians and the divisional police officer Ugbowo Division to appease the irate students to allow vehicle movement around the axis.

When contacted, deputy police spokeswoman ASP Jennifer Iwegbu said calm had returned to the area after several calls to the students demanding that a broken phone belonging to one of their colleagues be repaired.

In a statement signed by the school’s vice-chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami on Friday, she described the incident as unfortunate and called for calm.

The statement read: “The unfortunate incident of the confrontation between some students from our university and soldiers on Thursday, February 2, due to alleged student resistance to the soldiers’ attempt to jump in front of the campus ATM queue, is brought under control and the management of the university is in consultation with the hierarchy of S&T for amicable settlement.

“Management recognizes that these are challenging times for everyone and urges everyone to remain calm as they try to avoid a recurrence.

“Management also calls on the students to engage in continuous dialogue in resolving issues that affect them, rather than protest against any provocation, causing more harm and harm to themselves and other citizens,” added the statement to it.
