TRIBUTE: WE STRONGLY CONDEMN THE MURDER OF YUSUF NURUDEEN OMOMEEWA AND DEMAND JUSTICE FOR HIM. BY NAUS NATIONAL

The murder of Yusuf Nurudeen Omomeewa at the gate of Lagos State University (LASU) on the night of Wednesday 18th of August 2021 came as a rude shock to us. It was reported that Comrade Omomeewa was with a staff of the University known as Majek on the night of the attack in which he was shot dead while Majek also sustained a bullet injury on his arm.

Comrade Omomeewa had left his home to attend a kangaroo panel set up against him by the management of the University since his graduation in 2019 in a bid to further victimised him as a students right activist. It was on his way home after the panel that Com Omomeewa and Majek were shot at the gate of the University which led to the death of our dear comrade.

It should be put straight on record that the victimisation of Com Omomeewa had began since the inglorious days of Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun as the then Vice Chancellor of the University who after rigging Omomeewa from becoming the Students’ Union President further set up a panel against him. Even after the inglorious tenure of Prof Fagbohun expired, his successor, Professor Oyedamola Oke, as the acting VC had continued on the inglorious path of Fagbohun in silencing the voice of genuine students activists on the campus. Hence, a continuation of the victimisation of Com Omomeewa.

It is on record that at different times, Com Omomeewa had taken to his social media page to raise alarm of the several calls and messages of threat he had received on his life. These strange and scary calls were not disconnected from some of the dangerous plot of the LASU management to silence his honest voice by all means.

On this premise, coupled with the location of the murder which is the gate of the University, we lay our emphasis that the management of the University cannot be absolved from involvement in the murder of Com Omomeewa. Even about 48hours hours after this ugly incident occurred, the management of the University had not released any statement in respect to the murder that occurred right at their ‘secured’ premises. This further strengthen our conviction that the management of the Lagos State University must be held accountable for how a murder was carried out at their premises without any rescue whatsoever.

As a concerned body that appreciates the invaluable life and contribution of Comrade Omomeewa to the students struggles and liberation of the Nigerian people, we are deeply sad about his murder and therefore stand to put in all radical effort to ensure the mystery behind the murder is uncovered and justice is well served. We urge the leadership of the Lagos State University Students’ Union to be courageous and bold enough to demand justice for his death without fear or compromise as posterity will judge us all accordingly.

The National Association of University Students commiserate with relatives of Comrade Omomeewa, the Education Rights Campaign, the Socialists Organizations and other pro people movements he belonged to and associated with. Indeed it is not the number of years of our lives that count, but the worthiness of life we live throughout our existence. Omomeewa has lived an impactful life that have scared Vagabonds In Power out of their skin.

Our stances are with all Civil Rights Organisations and we shall be a part of all progressive actions towards getting justice for the murder of our beloved comrade.

A luta Continua!
