The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu Odumegwu, has hinted at the possible release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking during the 13th memorial anniversary of the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in Owerri, Imo State, Ambassador Ojukwu described Kanu’s release as a strategic step towards ending violence and insecurity in the Southeast.

According to her, releasing Kanu would expose those using IPOB’s name to perpetuate violence in the region. “President Tinubu recognizes that Kanu’s release is crucial for restoring peace. It will unmask the true instigators of chaos hiding behind IPOB’s agitation,” she said.

The diplomat condemned the violent enforcement of “sit-at-home” orders, highlighting their devastating impact on the economy and daily lives of the people. “These actions contradict the principles of self-determination. Ndigbo are known for their enterprising spirit and solidarity, not harming their own,” she remarked.

Ambassador Ojukwu also urged the Igbo community to unite against criminal elements and reclaim the region’s legacy of peace and prosperity. She emphasized that restoring order aligns with the ideals of the late Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, who championed the dignity and progress of the Igbo people.

Nnamdi Kanu has remained in detention since his controversial extradition from Kenya in June 2021, despite calls for his release from various groups. Ojukwu’s statement adds to growing pressure on the Tinubu administration to address the lingering crisis in the Southeast.
