No fewer than three police officers were reportedly shot dead by gunmen on Saturday night.

The incident, which took place at the border checkpoint along the Abakaliki/Enugu highway, was allegedly committed by gangsters, who were believed to be operating two Sienna buses.

Another police officer who was shot in the leg was due to be treated at a hospital in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi state.

The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the incident on Sunday.

Command spokesman SP Chris Anyanwu said: “The attack by gunmen on the border between Ebonyi and Enugu took place at around 6:08 pm.

“Three Operation Safer Highway police personnel were fatally wounded and later confirmed dead.

“The thugs operated in two sienna vehicles, drove into the checkpoint and opened fire on the police officers.”
