In typical Nigerian families, dogs are kept for security purposes and nothing more. Some keep them for other reasons. Whichever category you are in, there are things to consider before getting them a dog.

The experience of getting a dog has an unusual feeling that sometimes words can’t explain. Why? A dog can become a big part of your life more than for security purposes.

Here are some things to consider before getting a dog:

1. Your reason for buying one

Why do you think you need a dog? For security reasons, for companionship, because of peer pressure, for health purposes?

2. What do your family members say about it?

If you as an individual are not getting a dog and you have a family living with you, you should consider what your family thinks.

3. Can you bond with the dog?

Can you commit to the dog and for how long? Will you be there for the dog and his puppies as he reproduces? Can you feed the dog regularly and control its appetite? Can you take care of the dog, in terms of health and body?

Does the dog or pet fit into your lifestyle? You don’t want to choose a dog just because of how it looks without knowing if it will fit your lifestyle – work, health etc.

5. Do you prefer an adult dog or a young puppy?

You must decide whether you want an adult dog or a puppy.

6. Is your home safe for dogs?

To avoid accidents, you should bring things that can damage them, such as cords, poisonous foods, etc.
