Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, has slammed the House of Representatives for their decision to cut their salaries by 50% for six months. The lawmakers’ move was aimed at showing solidarity with Nigerians amid economic hardship, but Atiku believes they’re targeting the wrong thing.

“The real demons are in the allowances, not the salaries!” Atiku exclaimed.

“There’s wastage and unnecessary spending that needs to be tackled, not just a symbolic cut in salaries. We need an across-the-board cut in expenses, not just a token gesture.”

Atiku’s stance is clear: Nigeria can no longer afford to borrow to fund irresponsible government spending. He’s calling for real change and economic responsibility, not just a quick fix to appease the masses.

“The country is facing economic hardship, and we need drastic measures to address it”, Atiku said.

“But slashing salaries is not the answer. We need to cut the fat in government spending, starting with the excessive allowances that lawmakers receive.”

With each member paying N300,000 into a common purse, the legislative chamber will contribute N108 million monthly to the Federal Government and N648 million for six months.

However, in a post on X, Atiku condemned the move, asking the lawmakers to slash their allowances instead of their salaries.

According to Atiku, the country can no longer afford to borrow to fund irresponsibility in government.

He wrote, “The demons are in allowances and not salaries. There’s too much wastage and prioritisation of non-essential expenditures. What we want is an across the board cut in expenses pork. We can no longer afford to borrow to fund irresponsibility in government.”

Atiku’s comments have sparked a heated debate in the political sphere, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability in government spending. As the country navigates its economic challenges, one thing is clear: it’s time for real change and leadership, not just token gestures.
