The court convicts mother and son of killing in-laws over stolen meat

The Chief Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi, Benue State, Rosaline Iyorshe, has ordered the pre-trial detention of a 40-year-old housewife and mother, Charity Upev, along with her son, Tertsea, at a detention center for the alleged murder of Fanen, their in-laws, about stolen meat on Tuesday, January 31.

Although the chief magistrate did not accept their plea and the case adjourned until February 8. It was reported that the police charged Charity and her son with criminal conspiracy and wrongful death. These violations are in violation of Articles 97 and 222 of the Penal Code of Benue, 2004.

The prosecution, Inspector Jonah Uletu, disclosed to the court that the Divisional Police Officer of ‘E’ Division, Makurdi, had previously received information that Charity and her son Fanen had beaten up her in-laws, who also lived with her.

The prosecutor further explained that Charity claimed in her statement that they beat Fanen because he stole meat from her stockpot.

Police later confirmed that Fanen had been knocked unconscious by the beating. He was rushed to a hospital but died during treatment.
