Panic has engulfed the Rest House area of Kadarko in Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State following a deadly late-night assault by suspected Fulani militias, which claimed the life of a resident and left a mobile police officer injured.

The attack, which occurred around 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, saw the assailants storm the Tiv-dominated settlement under the cover of darkness, unleashing a hail of gunfire that sent terrified residents fleeing into the night.

The deceased, identified as Mr. Nyianshima — popularly known as “Iron Money” — was fatally shot during the chaos. A mobile policeman stationed at a checkpoint near the community sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment.

According to eyewitnesses, the timely response from security operatives helped repel the attackers and prevent greater casualties.

“When the gunshots started, people woke up in fear and ran for their lives,” a resident said.

Locals have linked the violence to recurring spillovers from the herder-farmer conflict in neighbouring Benue State. Residents allege that Kadarko and its surrounding villages — including Dooka, Angwan Yaara, and Dooga — often suffer retaliatory attacks whenever tensions escalate in Benue.

“Our farmlands have been taken over. Now our lives are constantly under threat,” another local lamented.

Community leader, Mr. Aondohemba, has called on the Nasarawa State Government and security agencies to take urgent action to protect vulnerable communities in the area.

“We cannot continue to live in fear in our own land,” he said.
