Sultan Declares Monday as First Day of Rabi’ul Awwal 1447AH

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Monday, August 25, 2025, as the first day of Rabi’ul Awwal 1447AH.

The announcement was made in a statement on Saturday by the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu.

According to the statement, the declaration followed the outcome of consultations with the National Moon Sighting Committee and various local committees across the country. Reports confirmed that the new crescent of Rabi’ul Awwal was not sighted on Saturday, August 23, 2025, corresponding to the 29th of Safar 1447AH.

Professor Junaidu explained that Sunday, August 24, 2025, would therefore complete the 30 days of Safar, paving the way for Monday, August 25, to be officially observed as the first day of Rabi’ul Awwal 1447AH.

“His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of NSCIA, has accepted the report and accordingly declared Monday, August 25, 2025, as the first day of Rabi’ul Awwal 1447AH,” the statement read.

Rabi’ul Awwal, the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar, holds special significance for Muslims worldwide as it marks the month in which the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) was born.
