Subsidy Removal: Your Palliatives Are Drops In The Ocean, Not Realisable — PDP Knocks Abiodun, Apc

Gov. Dapo Abiodun

The hardship that has continued to envelop the socioeconomic space of Ogun state since the sudden announcement of the subsidy removal by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led APC federal government has once again exposed the emptiness of the Dapo Abiodun government in Ogun state, PDP says.

“It also shows that the governor has gone overboard in his penchant to always copy hook, line and sinker from other state governments without paying detailed attention to the peculiarities and other salient realities in his domain.”

“Of course, our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP)  is not surprised that Mr. Dapo Abiodun has lost touch with realities because he has abandoned the ship of governance because of his desperation to circumvent the popular wish of Ogun people as freely expressed during the March 18 governorship election.”

“In specific terms, the PDP strongly holds that the recent announcement of some cardinal palliative measures aimed at ameliorating the excruciating pains of subsidy removal by the state government is not only elitist; the measures are not properly situated around current realities in Ogun state.”

“Is it not amazing that a supposed chief security officer of the state did not envisage that the current hardship has an imminent potential of heralding security treat in the land, yet, no preventive arrangement is mentioned by Mr. Governor. An hungry man, they say is an angry man. Mr Governor should be woken up from his deep slumber!”

“As a responsible political party that owes members of the public some fundamental explanations, we hold that Mr. Abiodun and his clueless government  should, first of all, inform the public of the total number of civil/public servants that are currently in its service.”

“This is part of due diligence which an honest and responsible government can not afford to ignore. Payment of #10,000 to only civil servants would eventually end up as a drop in the ocean.”

“What is the government’s safety net for those who operate the informal sector of the economy? Is Mr Abiodun and his illegitimate government, once again encouraging the petty traders, taxi drivers and several other millions of Small and Medium business outfits to go to hell?”

“While we hold that the onus is constantly on a responsive government to give detailed explanations to members of the public on prequalification for the peculiary allowances as parts of the palliative measures, we concur with immediate payment of workers’ leave bonuses; current and all arrears, gratuity and pensions.”

“Ordinarily, these are supposed to be first-line charges; as statutory payment to deserving beneficiaries in the first place, such should not be seen or categorised as favour by the government.”

“We also know, as a matter of fact, that Ogun State Civil servants are very responsible, they have always discharged their statutory services and duties with utmost dedication; therefore, there will be no need for the extraneous 20% daily attendance cut in workers strength as contemplated by mr. Abiodun.”

“The PDP believes that if the new policy is implemented as contained in the announcement, the sanctity and discipline in the civil service will be distorted.”

“Conversations around commencement of food palliatives, the establishment of Gateway Trading Company proposed commodity exchange and declaration of emergency on food security are another set of cheap talks aimed at creating false hope for the unsuspecting members of the public  on very sensitive public issues without any defining and detailing real action plan to hold on to.”

“With this, it shows, once again. Abiodun-led APC government is not only an intentional waste of Ogun state precious time, it is the biggest calamity to have happened to the state in recent times.”

“Another significant mark of the incompetence of the Abiodun government is the unanswered queries on the few buses bought and launched (though with pomp and pageantry) some months ago by former Minister of Transportation, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi which are now mostly off the road due to poor management. One then wonders which Mass Transit buses is Dapo Abiodun talking about in his announcement of palliatives.”

For every discerning mind, it is common knowledge that launching Electric Motorcycles and Tricycles where no city, town or village in the State enjoys more than 4 hours of continous electricity supply per day is definitely a no brainer, the PDP said.

“Even the 43KVA cummulative power plants initiative to cushion the energy supply from the national grid as was planned and implemented by the PDP government in 2007 has been deliberately abandoned to rot away since 2011.”

“Another part of the palliative announcement that has left a very sour taste in the mouth is the idea of asking individual local government and  Community Development Associations, CDAs to submit names of roads that require repair.”

“Is this how low governance has become in Ogun state? What has Mr Abiodun been doing in government since 2019? No wonder he and his rudderless APC were roundly rejected at the last polls. This is the same man who, during the last electioneering campaigns boosted, in the company of his aides to have transformed all roads within all local government areas into El Dorado.”

“Why is the absentee governor deliberately hiding the facts from the public and using State media agencies in the conspiracy and propaganda against the same people he swore to protect; when he should swallow his pride and seek help.”

“At difficult times such as this, a responsible government ought to, first of all, initiate a robust engagement with all relevant stakeholders in the state. That is the surest and most reliable step towards making policies on palliative measures, instead of making unrealisable empty promises.”

“Amid all this callous insensitivity and brazen ignorance on how to make government work for the ultimate good of the people, Ogun citizens and residents should however be consoled in the fact that the current government has a very short lifespan; it is an agony that will give way to an enduring relief and Ogun state shall smile again.”
