Ogun NUT declares indefinite industrial action, citing neglect by State Government…

All public primary and secondary schools across Ogun State were abruptly shut on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) embarked on an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare issues.

The union, in an official statement, said the decision followed the failure of the state government to address a backlog of critical demands affecting the professional and financial wellbeing of teachers. These include the non-payment of eight years’ leave allowances, suspension of the contributory pension scheme, the non-implementation of the new minimum wage, and delayed promotion approvals for 2023 and 2024.

According to the NUT, the industrial action aligns with the broader resolution of the Organised Labour in Ogun State, which directed civil and public servants to down tools in protest against the government’s alleged insensitivity to workers’ rights.

“Despite exhausting every avenue of dialogue, the government has continued to ignore our pressing concerns,” the statement read. “Teachers can no longer endure a system that undermines their future and the quality of education in the state.”

The union further emphasized that the strike, which began at midnight on July 15, is aimed at demanding justice and dignity for the teaching profession, and that it would remain in effect until the government meets all outlined conditions.

Classrooms across the state were under lock and key on Tuesday morning, with pupils and parents caught off guard by the sudden halt in academic activities. The NUT has, however, assured members that the action is legal and necessary, urging them to remain steadfast.

“This strike is not only lawful but a moral obligation to secure our collective future,” the union stated. “We thank all teachers for their cooperation and urge them to stay at home until further notice.”

No immediate response has been issued by the Ogun State Government as of press time.
