Senator Gbenga Daniel Hails Tinubu, Challenges Abiodun on Accountability at Igode Market Commissioning

Former Ogun State Governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD), has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms while openly criticizing Governor Dapo Abiodun for what he described as poor accountability despite increased federal allocations.
Daniel made the remarks at the commissioning of the Renewed Hope International Market in Igodè, Sagamu, during the BATOGD Movement’s midterm review tour. He noted that the removal of fuel subsidy had quadrupled state revenues and insisted that governors must justify the windfall with visible development.
“The fallout of subsidy removal is that more funds have been returned to states and Local Governments. Their allocations have increased more than fourfold, and governors must now give a good account of this generosity from the President,” Daniel said in a veiled attack on Abiodun.
The Senator expressed dismay over the condition of Igodè roads, revealing that private funds were used to make them passable ahead of the event. According to him, the state government has neglected strategic communities despite having access to record allocations from Abuja.
While faulting the state administration, Daniel praised Tinubu’s leadership for policy reforms on subsidy removal, foreign exchange, and the student loan scheme, describing them as courageous steps toward national renewal. He also reaffirmed his political loyalty, stressing that Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 is a project that transcends party lines.

Unveiling the BATOGD Movement, a grassroots mobilisation platform, Daniel contrasted his legacy with the present administration, citing interventions through his Gateway Front Foundation (GFF) — including microcredit for over 5,000 beneficiaries, thousands of bursaries and scholarships, and more than 3,000 free cataract surgeries.
On federal projects within his district, he highlighted progress on the proposed Naval Base at Abigi/Makun-Omi in Ogun Waterside and the aviation school linked to the Agro-Cargo Airport he initiated as governor. While acknowledging Governor Abiodun’s role in sustaining the airport project, he cautioned against “attempts to rewrite its history.”
Revisiting the agitation for an Ijebu State, the Senator disclosed that no fewer than 75 colleagues in the Senate had already endorsed the proposal, which he described as “justified, credible, and long overdue.”
Delivering a blunt message to the state government, OGD declared:
“With the allocations you now receive, Ogun people must not continue to suffer. Our communities must not remain in darkness, our roads must not remain death traps, and our markets must not depend on private interventions to survive.”
