The Nigerian Senate has slammed a six-month suspension on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) over her sexual harassment allegation against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The decision, announced during plenary on Thursday, March 6, 2025, followed the recommendations of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen (LP, Edo South).

As part of the sanctions, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s salary and security details will be withdrawn for the duration of the suspension. She has also been directed to issue a written apology for allegedly disrespecting the Senate.

Other conditions of the suspension include:

Six-month exclusion from all legislative activities, effective immediately.

Immediate surrender of all Senate properties in her possession.

Recommended News:

A restriction barring her from being present anywhere near the legislative chamber throughout the suspension period.

The Senate Committee dismissed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims that Akpabio had been silencing her in the chamber, describing the allegations as “frivolous.”

This development comes in the wake of a dramatic confrontation last Thursday when Akpoti-Uduaghan protested the reassignment of her seat. Upon arriving at the session, she discovered that her nameplate had been removed and her seat reassigned, leading her to challenge the decision.

Her suspension is expected to trigger mixed reactions from political observers, activists, and opposition figures, with questions arising over whether the decision was politically motivated or purely based on ethical concerns.
