Sagamu Youths Demand Justice, Fairness In Proposed Remo-Ijebu State Creation

The Sagamu Youth Association, led by Comrade Olugbenga Isiaka Lawal, widely recognized as ‘Ambassador Easy,’ has raised concerns over the ongoing deliberations between the Ijebu and Remo people regarding the name and capital of the proposed state expected to be carved out of Ogun State.
It is well known that the Remo Committee on State Creation, recently inaugurated by the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, CON, submitted a report recommending the name “Remo-Ijebu State,” with Sagamu as the capital.
The press conference was observed by the Honourable representing Makun, Sagamu 2 State Constituency at Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Ademola Adeyinka Adeniran (Sapele) and many community youth leaders.
Speaking during a 30-minute press conference held at the Sagamu Town Hall, Comrade Lawal acknowledged the long-standing advocacy for the creation of a new state. He expressed appreciation to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and members of the Federal House of Representatives for their continuous support in pushing for the new state.
He also extended gratitude to His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, for his leadership and guidance to the Ijebu people, as well as to His Royal Majesty, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, for his unwavering commitment to the progress of the Remo people.
The Sagamu Youths Association strongly emphasized that the demand for a new state is long overdue and must be approached with a sense of justice, fairness, and identity representation.
Comrade Lawal, in his speech, reiterated that this movement goes beyond political restructuring but is also centered on ensuring that the aspirations and interests of both the Remo and Ijebu people are well protected.
“For decades, debates have persisted regarding the political and economic status of Remoland and Ijebuland within Ogun State. We take immense pride in our significant contributions to the state’s economic and political development.

“We propose a state name that embodies the shared heritage of both Remo and Ijebu people. A neutral and inclusive name, such as Remo-Ijebu State, will ensure that no group feels sidelined.
“If, however, the name Ijebu State is adopted, then there must be a clear and fair arrangement ensuring that Remoland is adequately represented politically and economically.
“It is crucial that the state capital reflects a balance of interests. To maintain fairness and prevent marginalization, we propose Sagamu, Remo, as the capital due to its strategic location, infrastructural growth, and historical relevance.
“We also recommend an equitable distribution of Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the new state, proposing a 55% allocation to Ijebu and 45% to Remo. This would guarantee fair representation in governance and resource sharing.
“As we move forward, unity, strategic engagement, and unwavering commitment must remain our guiding principles. We must not allow ourselves to be divided or misled by political influences that do not align with our collective interests,” Comrade Lawal concluded.
With the state creation debate gaining momentum, all eyes are now on the Ijebu leaders to see how they will respond to these demands. Will they support an inclusive name and fair representation, or will they insist on a different approach?
The coming weeks will be crucial as discussions continue, with both Remo and Ijebu stakeholders expected to engage in further dialogue to determine the future structure of the proposed state.
