Rt. Hon. Basorun Muyiwa Oladipo (BMO) stands as a towering figure in Ogun State politics, revered for his unwavering commitment to grassroots development, governance, and cultural advancement. Born into the esteemed Oladipo family of Makun, Sagamu, Remo, Ogun State, BMO’s journey is one of academic excellence, professional distinction, and political mastery.

He began his education at Adeola Odutola Elementary School and Adeola Odutola College, Ijebu Ode, before advancing to the University of Lagos, Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University), and the Nigerian Law School. His impressive academic credentials include a Primary School Leaving Certificate (1973), Secondary School Certificate (1979), Higher Senior School Certificate (A Level, 1981), a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in History (1984), a Bachelor of Law (LLB, 1989), and a Barrister at Law (1991).

BMO’s professional career began with his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Nigeria Customs Service, Area 1, Port Harcourt, Rivers State (1984–1985). Following this, he joined H.F.P. Engineering Limited in Lagos. Between 1991 and 1998, he honed his legal expertise at Gbenga Oni & Associates in Lagos, Muyiwa Obanewa & Co in Sagamu, and later established Muyiwa Oladipo & Associates, now based in Abeokuta. A member of the Nigerian Bar Association (Ikeja Branch), BMO has demonstrated his deep-rooted commitment to the legal profession.

His political journey began in the youth wing of the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Sagamu. He later played pivotal roles in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) before transitioning to the Alliance for Democracy (AD) at the dawn of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. His grassroots appeal led to his election as a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, representing Sagamu 2 State Constituency (Makun) under AD in 1999. His leadership qualities were recognized when he was elected Speaker of the 4th Legislature on June 3, 1999, marking the beginning of his influential political career.

Between 2006 and 2011, BMO was a dedicated member of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), serving as an executive member of the Ogun State Contact Committee on Party Membership (2010). His influence grew when he was appointed the Coordinator for the Sagamu/Remo Axis in the 2011 Governorship/House of Assembly elections, which resulted in the emergence of Senator Ibikunle Amosun as Ogun State Governor.

A trusted ally of Governor Amosun, BMO was appointed as the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs (2011–2015), where he managed the affairs of traditional rulers, high chiefs, and grassroots communities with distinction. His exceptional leadership earned him a reappointment in 2015, this time as Honourable Commissioner for Culture and Tourism. In this role, he conceptualized and successfully launched the Nigerian Drum Festival in 2016, which later gained international recognition as the African Drums Festival in 2017.

A true grassroots politician, BMO’s contributions have been recognized with numerous awards and chieftaincy titles, including the Art for Peace Global Peace Ambassador (2017), Distinguished Old Students Award by Adeola Odutola College Old Students Association (AOCOSA, 2000), Millennium Gold Award, and High Commissioner for Justice and Peace of the International Youth Congress, Brussels, B elgium (2000). He also holds the prestigious chieftaincy titles of Basorun Oke-Akò, Ijebu (2001) and Basorun of Itunsokun Youth Association (now Isokun Oba Community Development Association), Itunsokun, Sagamu (2000).

Affectionately known as “3G Grandfather” by current Ogun State House of Assembly members, BMO remains a political force to be reckoned with. His passion for governance, community engagement, and cultural promotion continues to inspire many.
