ROADS OF RUIN: Ogun Communities Decry Deplorable Conditions, Appeal To Governor Abiodun For Intervention

Residents who spoke with our correspondent on Monday has lamented the deteriorating conditions of several roads in their environs and made an urgent appeal to Governor Dapo Abiodun to address these issues.

People of Pakuro and Ajumoni communities in Ogun State are expressing their dismay and frustration over the deteriorating roads in their areas, which have become a nightmare for commuters and a hindrance to economic activities.

Despite their efforts to maintain the roads through self-help initiatives, the roads continue to deteriorate, posing a threat to the livelihoods of residents. The communities have made a passionate appeal to Governor Dapo Abiodun to come to their aid and fix the roads, which they say are economically important to the state.

“We’re tired of constantly patching up the roads ourselves. We need the government to take responsibility and fix the roads once and for all,” said Olusegun Omolosho, Chairman of the Pakuro Community Development Committee.”

The residents lamented that the bad roads are affecting their ability to transport farm produce to the cities, causing them economic hardship. They also alleged that government agents, including those from the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Mining, are collecting revenue from residents without providing any benefits.

The communities have written several letters to the House of Assembly and the governor, but no action has been taken yet. They are now calling on the government to take immediate action to fix the roads and improve their living conditions.

The deplorable state of the roads has also led to increased wear and tear on vehicles, causing residents to spend more on maintenance and repairs. The communities are urging the government to take responsibility for maintaining the roads, which they say is its primary responsibility.

As the situation continues to worsen, residents are calling on Governor Abiodun to intervene and save them from the hardship caused by the deplorable roads. Will the government answer the call, or will the roads continue to deteriorate, leaving residents to suffer? Only time will tell.

“We are tired of taking palliative measures, spending a lot of money every year – at least N10m, which we raise within the community through taxes and contributions from shareholders, business owners, and those with filling stations, cement shops, schools, and other businesses along the road.”

“Despite our efforts, the road is still deteriorating due to the heavy traffic of tippers collecting sand and resources,” Owolabi said.

He also mentioned that the community had sent several letters to the House of Assembly, including one last year copied to the governor, but no action had been taken.

All efforts to reach the Commissioner for Works via phone calls and WhatsApp text messages did not yield any response as of the time of filing this report.
