Stakeholders from Ogun East at Awujale palace over Ijebu State creation

In a historic gathering at the Awujale Palace, Ijebu Ode, stakeholders from Ogun East Senatorial District have reignited the push for the creation of Ijebu State, signaling renewed hope for the long-standing aspiration. Traditional rulers, religious leaders, political representatives, and other key figures united to voice their collective demand for justice and equity in the proposed state’s creation.

Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East, passionately advocated for the new state’s creation, citing historical and socio-economic justifications. “The old Ijebu Province, established in 1923, remains the only administrative unit from that era yet to evolve into a state,” he stated.

“Our call for Ijebu State is not just persistent but deeply rooted in justice, fairness, and our unique identity as a distinct tribe within the Yoruba nation.”

Senator Daniel further highlighted how the creation of Ogun State in 1976 reversed the progressive step taken by the colonial administration, which recognized the need for Ijebu’s autonomy. He acknowledged the relentless advocacy by the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Adetona, GCON, as instrumental in the struggle, expressing optimism that the realization of the state is within reach.

The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Adetona, emphasized the unity between the Ijebu and Remo people, calling for solidarity amidst occasional political divisions. “What unites us is far greater than what divides us. This unity is critical as we move closer to making Ijebu State a reality,” he said.

The monarch praised the progress of the Bill for the creation of Ijebu State, which has already passed two readings in the National Assembly. He reassured attendees of the proposed state’s viability, pointing to its abundant resources, population, and economic potential.

Traditional rulers, local government chairmen, and religious leaders unanimously pledged their support, underscoring the importance of seizing the opportunity presented by the current Federal Government. The stakeholders resolved to intensify efforts to ensure the bill progresses and ultimately secures approval.

The meeting marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing agitation, with stakeholders expressing confidence that this united front will accelerate the realization of Ijebu State. Advocates are urging all Ijebu and Remo indigenes to remain steadfast as they approach this crucial juncture in the journey toward statehood.

This latest push sets the stage for what could be a historic breakthrough in the decades-long quest for the creation of Ijebu State.
