The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed deep disappointment over what it described as the “deliberate exclusion” of Ogun West Senatorial District and the marginal involvement of the Ijebu axis in the forthcoming 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2025.

In a statement issued on Sunday, May 18, 2025, and signed by the party chairman, Hon. Abayomi Tella, the PDP accused the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun of promoting regional favoritism by concentrating major events and infrastructure upgrades in Abeokuta and his native Remo zone, to the detriment of other parts of the state.

“It is highly unfortunate and unacceptable that none of the five local government areas that make up Ogun West—namely Ado-Odo/Ota, Yewa South, Yewa North, Ipokia, and Imeko-Afon—has been considered to host any sporting activity,” the statement read. “Equally disheartening is the fact that only hockey is scheduled to be played in the entire Ijebu zone, despite the presence of facilities such as the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode.”

The PDP pointed out that during the 2006 edition of the Games under former Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel, hosting rights were evenly spread across all zones, fostering inclusivity and a sense of unity. The party lamented what it described as a “retrogressive departure” from that model, accusing the current APC-led government of deepening divisions through selective infrastructural development.

“Millions of naira have reportedly been allocated for preparations at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, while facilities in Ilaro and Ijebu-Ode have been overlooked,” the party claimed, questioning the rationale behind what it sees as lopsided planning.

The PDP also criticized the silence of political office holders, traditional institutions, and community leaders from the affected regions, urging them to rise above partisan politics and defend the interests of their people.

“The Gateway Games should symbolize unity and shared pride for all Ogun indigenes. Turning it into a zone-specific affair is a disservice to the youth and the spirit of fair play,” the statement added.

As the 2027 general elections approach, the PDP called on the people of Ogun West and Ijebuland to take note of what it termed as continued systemic neglect under the current administration.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to promoting equity, fairness, and inclusive governance, vowing to stand by all marginalized communities in the state.
