“Okanlomo Eleyi” And “Oyinbo Poju Of Ogun”: President Tinubu Showers Governor Abiodun With New Titles At Awujale’s Fidau

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Sunday, added a cultural twist to the solemn atmosphere of the 8th-day Fidau prayers held in honour of the late Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, by bestowing new symbolic titles on the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.

In his remarks during the prayer session held in Ijebu-Ode, President Tinubu fondly described Governor Abiodun as “Okanlomo Eleyi” and “Oyinbo Poju of Ogun State,” drawing laughter and applause from the audience. The expressions, though informal, were laced with affection and a sense of familiarity, reflecting the long-standing rapport between both leaders.

The President’s use of “Eleyi” — a Yoruba phrase meaning “this one” — recalls a viral moment during his presidential campaign in 2022 when he used the same term to refer to Governor Abiodun in a political context. Now, rebranding it as “Okanlomo Eleyi,” Tinubu elevated the phrase into a term of endearment, loosely translating to “this special son.”

He further praised Abiodun’s leadership style and poise by calling him “Oyinbo Poju,” a humorous Yoruba expression connoting exceptional sophistication and polished appearance. The remarks, though delivered with a touch of humour, carried undertones of commendation for the governor’s administration and his calm, measured approach to governance.

The event, which drew dignitaries from across the country — including traditional rulers, political figures, and captains of industry — was held to mark the end of the 8-day mourning period for the late monarch, who reigned for over 60 years and left an indelible mark on the socio-political landscape of Ijebuland and Nigeria at large.

President Tinubu paid glowing tributes to the late Oba Adetona, describing him as a monarch of rare wisdom and enduring influence, while also reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to preserving the legacy of traditional institutions in Nigeria.

Governor Abiodun, in his remarks, expressed deep appreciation for the President’s presence and the symbolic titles, promising to uphold the legacy of leadership and dignity associated with Ogun State.

The President’s public display of warmth and camaraderie has once again spotlighted the evolving political dynamics between the two leaders, rooted in mutual respect and a shared vision for national and regional development.
