Ogun Youths Demand Action Against Rising Crime, Road Accidents Linked To Tricycle Operators In Atan-Lusada-Agbara

…Petition Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ogun Assembly Over Security Lapses
A youth group, Concerned Atan Lusada Agbara Youths Group (CALAYG), has raised alarm over the worsening state of security in Ogun State, calling on Governor Dapo Abiodun to urgently address the increasing cases of highway robberies and road accidents allegedly perpetrated by tricycle (Maruwa) operators.
In an open letter addressed to the governor and copied to the Ogun State House of Assembly and the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Chairman, the group commended Abiodun’s efforts in tackling cultism, thuggery, and union crises but insisted that tricycle operators remain a major security threat in the state.
According to CALAYG, criminal activities involving tricycle riders have become rampant, with reports of passengers being robbed, harassed, and extorted. The group further alleged that tricycle operators now move with “conductors” who act as accomplices in criminal activities.
“Every sincere resident of Ogun State today knows that the rate of highway robbery is alarming, and in most cases, these crimes are committed by tricycle operators. Many victims have been attacked, yet people blame the governor unfairly, not realizing that these criminals are exploiting loopholes in the transport sector,” the letter stated.
The group also raised concerns over the influx of tricycle riders from Lagos and Oyo States, who reportedly cross into Ogun State in the evenings to engage in unlawful activities after paying their levies in their home states.
Another alarming revelation in the letter is the alleged high rate of drug abuse among tricycle operators. According to CALAYG, cheap drugs (Oja) are commonly abused by Maruwa riders, making them reckless on the roads and responsible for 7 out of every 10 highway accidents in Ogun State.
“They drive under the influence, stop and park anywhere without caution, and endanger the lives of other road users. Their indiscipline is a direct consequence of weak leadership within the tricycle union,” the letter added.

To curb the menace, CALAYG is demanding the following urgent actions from Governor Dapo Abiodun:
1. Reorganization of the Tricycle Riders and Owners Association to ensure competent leadership and strict regulation.
2. Strict enforcement of registration and identification for all tricycle operators to track criminal elements.
3. Collaboration with security agencies to curb the infiltration of non-resident riders from Lagos and Oyo States.
4. Zero tolerance for drug abuse among transport operators, with mandatory drug tests and penalties for offenders.
The youth group warned that failure to act could tarnish the governor’s legacy and be recorded in history books as a “missed opportunity to secure Ogun State.”
“A stitch in time saves nine. We urge the government to act swiftly before these security loopholes explode into full-blown anarchy,” the statement concluded.
The open letter has sparked debates among residents, with many calling for stricter regulations on tricycle operations in the state. Meanwhile, CALAYG has threatened to escalate the matter to national media platforms if the government fails to take decisive action.
Excellency, we might be doing you grave harm if we notice this and didn’t call your attention to it knowing fully well that you can’t be everywhere hence let’s do something before the grape get sour.
May the good Lord continue to give you strength to steer the state towards the future we all inspire.

Will Governor Dapo Abiodun heed the call to sanitize Ogun’s transport sector, or will insecurity continue to fester? The coming weeks will tell.
