The Ogun Youth Assembly (OYA) has issued a passionate appeal to Governor Dapo Abiodun to declare a state of emergency on the Lafenwa-Enugada road, following a devastating accident that claimed four lives and injured two others on Monday.

The group’s Chairman, Amb. Habeeb Whyte, and Public Relations Officer, Olufemi Owoeye, signed a statement urging the Governor to take immediate action to prevent further tragedies on the notorious road.

According to the OYA, the recent tragic incident is a stark reminder of the need for immediate action to rehabilitate the road and implement measures to prevent accidents. The group expressed deep concern for the safety and well-being of road users, particularly young people, who are the major users of the road and future leaders of the state and nation.

“We humbly and urgently appeal to Governor Abiodun to prioritize the implementation of accident prevention measures on the Lafenwa-Enugada road,” Amb. Whyte said.

“The recent tragic incident that claimed four lives and injured two others is a stark reminder of the need for immediate action. We recommend that the state government consider the installation of speed breakers to control speed, deployment of traffic enforcement personnel to monitor and regulate traffic, provision of adequate street lighting to enhance visibility, and implementation of a public awareness campaign to educate road users on safe driving practices.”

The OYA emphasized that the Lafenwa-Enugada road is a major commuter route, and it is essential that the government pays due attention to it to mitigate and forestall present and potential significant risks to road users. The group commended Governor Abiodun for initiating the reconstruction of the 70-kilometer Abeokuta-Ifo-Ota-Lagos expressway, a critical road connecting Ogun State to Lagos State.

However, they stressed that the Lafenwa-Enugada road requires immediate attention to prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of road users.

“We believe that the Ogun State Government, under Governor Abiodun’s leadership, has the capacity and resources to address this issue promptly. We urge the Governor to treat this matter with the urgency and importance it deserves,” Amb. Whyte said.

“This is not just a matter of infrastructure development but a critical issue of human life and dignity. We plead with the Governor to take immediate action and rehabilitate the Lafenwa-Enugada road to prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of road users.”
