Ogun Gov’t Shuts Down Food Agro And Allied Industries Limited For Environmental Violations

Company found guilty of Releasing untreated wastewater and Oil spillage.

In a decisive move to uphold environmental standards, the Ogun State government has closed down Food Agro and Allied Industries Limited, situated at Kilometre 40, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ijako, Sango-Ota area of the state. The closure comes as a result of the company’s flagrant disregard for environmental regulations and government directives.

Alhaji Farook Akintunde, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment and Chairman of the state Taskforce on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, revealed that the company was shut down due to multiple infractions. These include bypassing its Effluent Treatment Plants, leading to the release of untreated wastewater into the environment, particularly affecting the newly rehabilitated Lagos-Abeokuta expressway. This action is deemed as willful destruction of public infrastructure and poses a risk to the residents of the area.

Furthermore, the company was found culpable of environmental degradation through oil spillage, which not only poses immediate harm but also threatens the groundwater of surrounding communities. Despite previous warnings and a stop-work order from the state government, the company failed to rectify the identified issues, prompting the government’s decisive action.

Akintunde emphasized that the closure will remain in effect until all environmental violations are corrected and verified by the state government. He underscored the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental compliance and restoring environmental sanity in affected areas.
