NUJ calls for immediate action to end harassment of journalists
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for immediate action against impunity and harassment of journalists by security agencies.
Chairman of NUJ in Jigawa State, Comrade Garba Muhammad Balangu, stated this while briefing newsmen to commemorate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.
He said the second of November is a day set aside by the United Nations as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.
The theme of this year is “Keep Truth Alive: “Protect Journalists, Protect the Truth.”
He said as the fourth realm of the estate, journalists are experiencing harassment from security agencies and some public office holders while discharging their constitutional mandate.
The NUJ chairman urged for the protection of the right of journalists to enable them to perform their constitutional duties without fear or favor, especially during the 2023 general election.
Balangu said NUJ is committed to protecting the rights of all its members in Jigawa State.
The Special Adviser to Governor Muhammadu Badaru Abubakar on Media and Publicity Habibu Nuhu Kila, said the economic situation of the country and the advent of social media had also helped in creating more complexity and proliferation of fake news in the country.
He said the Jigawa state government is working tirelessly to create an enabling environment for all the working journalists in the state.
