NLC Pushes for N150,000 Minimum Wage Amid Rising Living Costs

The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to approve a new minimum wage of ₦150,000 for workers in the state, citing skyrocketing costs of living and wage reviews recently implemented in Imo and Ebonyi states.
Speaking on Thursday, the Chairperson of Lagos NLC, Comrade Funmi Sesi, said the current minimum wage of ₦85,000 no longer reflects the realities of life in Lagos, where accommodation, transportation, feeding, and utilities are far more expensive than in other parts of the country.
“The time has come for an upward review of the minimum wage in Lagos. At least someone has taken the bull by the horns and opened the space,” Sesi declared, adding that no one could fault Governor Sanwo-Olu if he moved to raise the bar for workers in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

She stressed that Lagos workers deserve better pay and improved working conditions that are commensurate with the state’s economic realities, expressing optimism that other governors would emulate the bold steps taken in Imo and Ebonyi.
Recall that Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State recently increased the minimum wage for civil servants from ₦76,000 to ₦104,000, while the Ebonyi State Government also raised workers’ wages from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000.
The Lagos NLC insists that given the state’s economic profile and high cost of living, anything short of ₦150,000 would not guarantee workers a decent standard of living.
