The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has met with transport workers in Lagos State, assuring them of better welfare policies and plans to revamp the sector nationally.

The AAC candidate also vowed that his government would resuscitate the transportation sector in the country with concentration on the welfare of transport workers.

Speaking with transport unions in a meeting in Lagos, Sowore said, “Our government will invest hugely in road infrastructure; we will establish a modern public bus transit system and for private transporters, we will subsidise the cost of buying buses.

“The drivers we will recruit to work in the public transport scheme will be provided a housing scheme and healthcare scheme.”

Sowore added that his government would also put an end to the shenanigans of notorious transport unions who had turned themselves into tools in the hands of the ruling All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party politicians to disrupt elections.

Reacting, Hassan Taofeek, the Chairman, Ibile Drivers Stakeholders’ Welfare Association of Nigeria, declared support for the candidacy of Sowore.

“We have decided not to follow both APC and PDP because we know what we are doing. We can’t engage ourselves in election rigging and vote buying. We are ready to follow you,” he said.

Sowore had been in Lagos on consultations and meetings with various groups and stakeholders.

Eaglesforesight had reported on Monday that Sowore urged Nigerians not to vote for ailing candidates who will use the country’s resources to treat themselves.

Sowore had spoken when he was welcomed by thousands of his supporters and loyalists in Lagos.

The human rights activist had attended the 13th Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Lecture in Ikeja.

The AAC presidential candidate said, “We [Nigerians] are tired of all these leaders who use Aso Rock for hospitals.”

He had described this as a major cause of the country’s underdevelopment.

“I just took a walk from the airport to show that Nigeria needs a solid, healthy and fit President.”

“We are tired of all these leaders who use Aso Rock for hospitals,” he had added.
