Man arrested three months after setting wife on fire
Men from the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 46-year-old man, Hassan Azeez, three months after he allegedly poured gasoline on his wife, Olayinka Hassan, and set her on fire.
The suspect allegedly set his wife on fire last October because she had not prepared his food on time and fled to the Republic of Benin.
The public relations officer of the state police, Abimbola Oyeyemi, made the announcement in a statement on Friday.
Oyeyemi added that the suspect was arrested following a report filed by the victim’s father at Ibogun Divisional Headquarters.
The PPRO said that the victim’s father reported the case on October 22, 2022, that his daughter was set on fire by her husband over a minor disagreement and that the victim, a mother of a child, was rushed to a hospital in Ibadan brought.
“Following the report, the DPO Ibogun Division, CSP Samuel Oladele, quickly mobilized his men and went to the scene. But before he got there, the suspect had escaped.
“Since then, the police have been on his trail until January 22, when he was finally apprehended.
“When questioned, the suspect who claimed to have run away to the Republic of Benin confessed to committing the crime, but blamed the devil. “
According to him, he asked the victim to prepare food for him, but instead of the victim preparing his food, she was busy washing clothes.
He further stated that he got annoyed because he was hungry and the annoyance made him pour gasoline on her and set her on fire.
When asked whose clothes the woman was washing, the suspect confessed that they were his clothes.
However, Oyeyemi said Police Commissioner Lanre Bankole had ordered the suspect be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s homicide unit for further investigation and possible prosecution.
