Lagos Assembly Shake-Up: Meranda Takes Charge, Names New Leadership After Obasa’s Impeachment
The Lagos State House of Assembly has ushered in a new era of leadership following the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. The shake-up was announced on Friday by the newly elected Speaker, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa 1), during her first plenary session in charge.
Obasa was impeached on Monday by 32 out of 40 lawmakers, citing allegations of gross misconduct. Alongside him, the Clerk of the House, Mr. Lekan Onafeko, was suspended over accusations of financial impropriety.
With the leadership mantle now in her hands, Meranda unveiled four key appointments to steer the Assembly forward:
Majority Leader: Mr. Temitope Adewale (APC-Ifako-Ijaiye 1)
Deputy Majority Leader: Mr. Adedamola Kasunmu (APC-Ikeja 1)
Chief Whip: Mr. Setonji David (APC-Badagry 2)
Deputy Chief Whip: Mr. Babatunde Saani (APC-Kosofe 2)

The Assembly also dissolved all standing committees formed under Obasa’s leadership, signaling a complete overhaul of its operational structure.
Notably, Mr. Mojeed Adams, the former Chief Whip, was elevated to the position of Deputy Speaker. However, Obasa, Adams, and another lawmaker, Mr. Akinsanya, were absent during the plenary, adding intrigue to the unfolding political drama.
This leadership shake-up marks a fresh start for the Lagos Assembly under Meranda’s stewardship, as lawmakers prepare for a new chapter of governance.
