Kebbi: S/Court Confirms Aliero as PDP Candidate for Central Senatorial District
The Supreme Court on Monday confirmed Senator Adamu Aliero as the People’s Democratic Party candidate for the Kebbi Central Senatorial District of Kebbi State in the upcoming general election.
In a leading judgment of Judge Centus Nweze, delivered by Judge Amina Augie, the apex allowed Aliero’s appeal, stating that “the verdict of the lower court, in which Saidu Haruna was declared the winner of the Kebbi Central Senatorial District primaries , hereby set aside.”
While four judges on the panel unanimously agreed with the ruling ruling, Judge Emmanuel Agim disagreed with his ruling.
The ruling was appealed by Aliero who challenged the decision of the lower courts that invalidated his candidacy.
It should be recalled that last November, the Court of Appeals, Sokoto Division, dropped the lawsuit filed by Aliero against the Federal Supreme Court’s decision on the party’s primary elections in Kebbi State.
The appeals court verdict, handed down by Judge Mohammed Danjuma, upheld the ruling of Federal High Court Judge Babagana Ashigar, Birnin Kebbi, who declared Haruna Saidu a PDP candidate.
The respondents to the appeal were the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Judge Ashigar had confirmed the primaries on September 27, 2022 that produced Saidu as the senate candidate for Kebbi Central.
The appeals court judge said he went through all the arguments of various counsel, quotes from court decisions and other court considerations to reach the decision.
He dismissed the lawsuit for lack of merit and affirmed the lower court’s judgment.
