JNI demands NAF investigation into accidental bombing of Nasarawa
The leadership of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam has condemned the killing of 47 herders during the accidental air strikes by the Nigerian Air Force in Nasarawa and called on the federal government to hunt down the perpetrators for prosecution.
The JNI is headed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, who is also the spiritual leader of the Nigerian Muslims.
The JNI, through its secretary-general, Dr. Khalid Abubakar-Aliyu, also issued a terse statement in Kaduna on Thursday calling on the federal government to compensate victims’ families for the loss of their loved ones during the attack.
According to the group, the government should thoroughly investigate the events that culminated in the most unfortunate bloodshed in Doma, adding that the government should also investigate its military, especially the Nigerian Air Force, on the matter.
The JNI warned the government to sweep the matter under the carpet, saying the incident was one too many, as the attack was designed to instill fear among farmers and herders in Nasarawa state.
The statement read: “Jama’atu Nasril Islam, after careful assessment and following the events of the horrific attack of Doma, condemns the massacre in the strongest terms.
“It also identifies with the government and people of Nasarawa State, over the horrific massacre of more than 40 innocent Fulani herdsmen in the Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. After the grotesque slaughter of hundreds of cows by the so-called unidentified persons, without any intervention from the security forces in the area.
“In fact, some sources claimed that helicopters bombed the victims, while others said it was a horrific sporadic coordinated attack from different angles on the victims, a very heartbreaking and bewildering situation.
“The carnage was one incident too many to bear. It must be said that this particular act of heartlessness in Doma was a calculated attempt to terrify farmers and herdsmen.”
The sultan group said Nigerians were desperate for concrete action on the issue and called on the government: “Identify with victims and places of attacks by feeling compassion for the people, it is better late than never.
“A national broadcast after the visit would be much needed to discourage reprisals. It is clear that people are angry about many recent events affecting innocent defenseless people and that the government needs to act quickly.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria must pay compensation (Diyya) to the bereaved, for justice, justice and the exclusion of any possibility of revenge or reprisal.
“Prosecuting officials who fail in the performance of their assignment(s), in order to deter other careless officials.
“Work with relevant security agencies with a timeline to end, and/or at least avert, all security threats threatening the country and also clean up small arms and light weapons (SALWs) in the hands of criminals, otherwise Nigeria will continue to witness the increase in gun proliferation for civilian self-defense as the government is apparently not so inclined to do so.
