Incessant Killings Rock Igbepa Community: Residents Call For Government Intervention Amid Rising Insecurity

The once peaceful Igbepa community in Sagamu has been thrust into chaos as residents grapple with the fear of rising insecurity. In recent months, the community has witnessed a disturbing increase in the killings of motorcycle riders, allegedly perpetrated by unknown gangs. In response, a high-level meeting was convened, bringing together residents, community leaders, and security agencies to address the situation and chart a way forward.

During the meeting, CSP Fred Odeh, the officer in charge of Sagamu division, expressed his deep sympathy for the families affected by the recent violence. He confirmed that investigations are underway, with one suspect already in custody. However, he acknowledged that more work needs to be done as Kujore, Abattoir, and three other areas have been identified as dangerous flashpoints where criminal activities continue to escalate.

CSP Odeh called on the entire Igbepa community to work hand-in-hand with the security agencies to ensure that peace is restored. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between youths, hunters, and farmers, urging them to voluntarily assist the authorities in providing information and support. “I am not comfortable hearing reports that our people are being killed in the division I’m overseeing,” Odeh said, expressing his determination to bring an end to the senseless killings. He also assured the community that financial contributions would be made towards strengthening local security efforts.

Despite the security agencies’ efforts, CSP Odeh noted that Igbepa remains a significant area of concern. “Igbepa is recently the only community giving me unrest,” he stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation. Residents, however, are equally frustrated and are now looking to the government for immediate and lasting solutions.

Community Leaders and Residents Propose Urgent Solutions

At the meeting, several community leaders and concerned residents proposed practical measures to tackle the insecurity. Adeoye Erinle, Maaba, and Isooso residents suggested building surveillance towers to increase visibility and monitor activities in crime-prone areas. Olawale Otasanya advocated for the clearing of government-acquired landed properties in Igbepa, which have become hideouts for criminals. These areas, if properly managed and developed, could reduce crime rates and create safer spaces for the community.

Prince Daodu and Johnson Olayinka Tade stressed the importance of building schools and making better use of government-owned properties in the area. They argued that educational institutions could serve as a deterrent to crime by engaging local youths and providing them with opportunities for learning and personal development.

Concerns Over Gateway International Market and Scavengers’ Activities

Another significant issue raised during the meeting was the insecurity around Gateway International Market. Mrs. Christiana Otasanya, a resident of Igbepa, voiced her concerns over the area, stating that it has become increasingly dangerous for both traders and residents. She urged the government to intervene and restore safety to the vicinity.

Furthermore, several community members pointed fingers at scavengers as a major source of insecurity. One resident highlighted the problem of unchecked scavenging activities, which many believed have contributed to the recent wave of violence. However, the community agreed on the need for diplomatic measures, recognizing that some scavengers are legitimately earning a living. A call was made for the authorities to differentiate between criminal elements and law-abiding individuals to ensure that justice is served fairly.

“We must work closely with the government and security agencies to find lasting solutions,” Prince Gbenga said, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and community engagement in resolving the crisis.

As Igbepa battles with these security challenges, there is a growing consensus that the Ogun State Government must intervene decisively. The residents are calling for more police patrols, the deployment of surveillance equipment, and a comprehensive development plan for the area that includes addressing the unemployment issues that may be fueling the violence.

Governor Dapo Abiodun is urged to prioritize the security of Igbepa and its neighboring communities by providing the necessary resources to the local security agencies, empowering the youth through job creation, and ensuring that government-owned properties are properly developed to prevent them from becoming havens for criminal activities.
