Nigeria’s renowned erudite professor and a member of the Labor Party (LP) has pressed heavily on the country’s airport managers by declaring that if the Labor Party wins the presidential election this month, it will sack any airport manager in charge of airports that not measure up to international standard within six months.

Speaking at the quarterly Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI) business breakfast meeting in Lagos on Thursday, Utomi said there was no reason why Nigerian airports should not be properly managed to provide common services that meet international standards.

Speaking at the breakfast meeting themed “Aviation in Nigeria Beyond 2023 General Election Challenges & Prospects,” Utomi stated, “If we get into government, we would fire any airport manager within six months if the airport he manages is not up to standards seen in other parts of the world.

“What is so difficult about a clean toilet for people to use at our airports? Our politics should be about details of how things happen and how to hold people accountable when it doesn’t happen. We travel all over the world and come back to see something different. This is no longer allowed.”

While revealing some of the Labor Party’s plans for the aviation sector, Utomi mentioned the plans to build many cities in Nigeria and connect these cities through intermodal transport systems.

While identifying weak institutions as the biggest development challenge in Nigeria, the politician-cum-professor stated: “Now is no longer the time for politics of transactions. It’s time to redeem the nation. When people know there are consequences for their actions, they will start doing the right things.”

Earlier in his opening remarks, the chairman of Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI), an industry non-governmental organisation, Dr Gabriel Olowo mentioned the worrying losses suffered by airlines and service providers during the recent strike that has disrupted business activities on the airport disrupted. hence the government is urged to address such issues.

His words: “A domestic airline reportedly lost N500 million Naira due to the abrupt closure of MM2. We strongly condemn the strike and the inadequate management response. Apologies, adequate compensation must be provided to all parties involved”.
