Hon. Uchechi Smart Akandu, founder of the Akandu Humanitarian Foundation, has launched a Back-to-School Outreach in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State. The initiative, which saw the donation of over 500 notebooks, targeted three public primary schools: St. Dominic Onicha Ezi East, Eziala Central School Amumara, and Ezi West Community School Oboama.

Dressed in a student-style blue and white uniform to express unity with the children, Hon. Akandu used the outreach to shine a spotlight on the deteriorating state of public education in the area. Speaking during the visit, he criticized the lack of infrastructure and government intervention in basic education.

“Many of these school buildings were constructed through community efforts,” Akandu noted. “It’s unfortunate that our representatives have allowed these institutions to fall into such disrepair. Our children deserve more than promises—they deserve action.”

He called on elected officials at the local and state levels to take responsibility, stating that while the Imo State Governor has made efforts, the burden of grassroots development lies with local representatives.

“Governance is a shared responsibility,” he said. “The Governor cannot be everywhere at once. That’s why we have representatives—to bridge the gap between the government and the people. If they’re not reporting accurately or acting with urgency, the system fails our children.”

Hon. Akandu, who previously served as Personal Assistant to the Ogun State Commissioner for Local Government, compared the situation in Ezinihitte Mbaise with what he described as notable successes in Sagamu Local Government, Ogun State.

“There’s a clear contrast. Communities in other states are enjoying functional schools and responsive leadership. Our people need to see these examples and begin to demand better,” he remarked.

With the 2027 elections on the horizon, Akandu urged citizens to prioritize competence and accountability when electing leaders.

“We cannot afford to make emotional choices anymore. The future of Ezinihitte Mbaise depends on leaders who are ready to work, not just talk,” he added.

The outreach program by the Akandu Humanitarian Foundation reflects an ongoing effort to promote equitable access to quality education and inspire a culture of civic responsibility among young people.

“Education is the foundation of any great society,” Akandu concluded. “We must protect it at all costs.”
