Gunmen kill Imo judge in court
Gunmen killed Nnaemeka Ugboma, the presiding judge of the Ejemekwuru Customary Court in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, on Thursday.
He was killed by gunmen operating on motorcycles while presiding over a court hearing, our correspondent was told by close sources.
The incident brought the court session to an abrupt end as lawyers, court officials and litigants fled.
The murder of the lawyer our correspondent believes came from the Nnebukwu community in Oguta LGA caused panic in the Ejemekwuru community as both natives and residents fled their homes.
One of the sources said: “The lawyer was a law graduate in 1991. He was murdered in his court as he sat. His killers came on motorcycles. They entered the court, dragged him out, shot him dead and drove off .
“His body was there when people in the courtroom fled. The whole thing is confusing because no one knew any reason while they killed him. He was from Nnebukwu community in Oguta LGA here.
When contacted, the president of the Owerri branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ugochukwu Allinor, who confirmed the killing, said the branch would inform the public of its actions in relation to the incident.
State police spokesman Henry Okoye did not take his calls when contacted and had yet to respond to a text message sent to his cell number at the time of this report’s filing.
