Gunman opens fire near Jerusalem synagogue the day after the deadly Israeli raid
A gunman opened fire outside a synagogue in east Jerusalem on Friday night, killing at least seven people and wounding four before police shot him, officials said. It was the deadliest attack on Israelis in years and increased the risk of further bloodshed.
The attack, which took place as worshipers observed the Jewish Sabbath, came a day after an Israeli military strike killed nine people in the West Bank.
The outbreak of violence, which also included a barrage of rockets from Gaza and retaliatory Israeli airstrikes, posed an early challenge to Israel’s new government, which is dominated by ultra-nationalists who have pushed for a hardline against the Palestinians.
It also cast a cloud over a visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the region on Sunday.
