A group of an association named Take It Back Movement, campus wing, has raised an eyebrow on the National Association Of Nigerian Students, Lagos axis, over the statement released against Academic Staff Union Of Universities by the NANS Lagos State axis chairman.

The movement made it known to Eaglesforesight correspondent, that, they would no longer take it softly with the ways NANS are trending against all movements these days.

Eaglesforesight recalled that a statement was issued out by Comrade Adenola Michael, the national coordinator of take it Back Movement, campus wing. He said below as quoted:

“Equipping public institutions with 21st-century facilities, employing enough lecturers to match the ratio of students and adequate payment of staff, Revitalization of the dying public education is ASUU’s chief demand and for which they have for decades been uncompromisingly pressing home.”

“Providing free and quality education; instead of the Federal Government fulfilling the basic constitutional duty owed to Nigerian students, has further quickened the death of public education by underfunding the most crucial sector of any Nation desirous of peace and development. This year for instance, out of 16.39 trillion general budgetary allocations, N1.29 trillion, amounting to a paltry 7.9 per cent was allocated to education against the United Nations benchmark of 15-20 per cent.”

“It is in thought with the above facts that we direct Nigerian students to own the struggle for the revitalization of education, spearheaded by ASUU. And in the spirit of solidarity rise up in protest against the deliberate act of the government to deprive children of the masses from accessing education.”

However, Comrade Adekunle Ajayi popularly known as ‘Wiseman’ in his conversation with Eaglesforesight correspondent, he registered his displeasure over the actions and inactions of NANS against ASUU

“The statement by Lagos NANS is insensitive and lacks logic. The students need to understand that if lecturers are poorly paid with so bad welfare, their education is in jeopardy. They should join ASUU to face the government squarely on the consciously underfunding of education. They should understand that those in governments deliberately betray agreements with ASUU in order to keep the academic calendar shoddy and delayed as most of their children school abroad. The NANS leaders must start critical thinking!”, Adekunle Wiseman said.

BEING THE PRESS TEXT OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS, LAGOS AXIS, ON THE SEASONAL ASUU STRIKE

Greatest Nigerian Students!

Gentlemen of the press!!

Ladies and gentlemen!!!

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said its members have resolved to embark on an indefinite strike if the Federal Government fails to implement the Memorandum of Action it signed with the union last year.

As an association, we are upset at the manner in which unprecedented strike being embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities has turned Nigerian students to sacrificial lamb in their fight of ego with the Nigerian government since 2009 over the same issue.

It is our belief that this strike is not in anyway beneficial to the Nigerian students’ populace, but it is rather a means to unnecessarily disrupt the academic space through unending strike action that has no bearing.

Though, we understand the fact that the educational sector is in a pitiable state, but, the manner in which ASUU strike is being conducted does not show any form of seriousness from the Union. We expect that the fight should not be a on/off action because, with such, serious challenges have been created to having quality and smooth education across higher institutions of learning in the country. All the strike actions does is to truncate academic calendar across institutions without any meaningful result to the students.

We hereby appeal to both parties to resolve this quarterly ASUU strike finally as soon as possible, before, Nigerian students are left with no other option than to take to this street, as the world is watching.

On another note, we commend the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu for finding it worthy to assent to the bill seeking for the upgrade of Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education and Michael Otedola College of Primary Education to Lagos State University of Education. We are of the belief that the upgrade would mean development to the educational sector in Lagos State and it will once again bring Lagos closer to achieving the THEME agenda of the government. At the same time, we must commend the Lagos State House of Assembly, ably led by Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa for possessing the political will to initiate such bill.

Conclusively, the students community in the State is pleased with the manner at which issues are being handled by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Barr. Tokunbo Wahab through his Senior Special Assistant on Tertiary Institution, Hon. Tayo Sanyaolu. We are persuaded that indeed, the Governor has appointed capable hands to head the students’ community in the State, and they have been playing a leading role in maintaining peace in all tertiary institutions in the state, especially in the recent NANS JCC Lagos Election.

Signed: Comr. Olusesi Tolulope Samson, NANS CHAIRMAN, LAGOS
