Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun-East Senatorial District, on Saturday empowered residents of Ijebu North-East Local Government Area with tools designed to boost livelihoods and promote local enterprise, while reiterating his long-standing advocacy for the creation of Ijebu-Remo State.

The empowerment programme, organized under the BATOGD Initiative Movement, was held at Equity Hotel and Suites, Eruwon Road, Ijebu-Ode. Beneficiaries received motorcycles, sewing machines, generators, and other items targeted at supporting small-scale businesses and improving household welfare.

The event drew a wide array of dignitaries, including traditional rulers across Ijebu North-East. Among them were Oba Odusanya Oduneye, the Olu of Odosenlu Alaro; Oba Barr. Okubena, the Elerunwon of Eruwon Ijebu; Oba Gabriel Onafuwa, the Oliworo of Iworo Ijebu; Oba Rashidi Salami, the Sadiriren of Isoyin Ijebu; HRH Oba Babatunde Oredipe, the Olu of Oke-Eri Ijebu; and Oba Oluseye Olusaanu, the Ajalaye of Ilugun South, alongside party leaders and faithful from across Ogun East.

In his address, Senator Daniel emphasized the need for people-focused governance.

“I am not here to say we have achieved all we promised, but it is necessary for us to tour each local government to know what is next for our people. Only a few weeks ago, we commissioned projects already touching lives in another part of Ogun-East. Like today’s gathering, these efforts are to ensure that governance remains transparent, accountable, and truly people-focused,” he said.

The former governor disclosed that more than a thousand residents had benefitted from earlier phases of the BATOGD empowerment scheme. He also urged the Ogun State Government to prioritize cooperation over “petty politics,” particularly in the area of education and community development.

Turning to the agitation for a new Ijebu-Remo State, Senator Daniel restated that Ijebu remains one of Nigeria’s oldest provinces yet to attain statehood. He proposed that the nine local governments within Ogun-East could form the nucleus of the new state.

“My appeal is to all Ijebu and Remo indigenes, both at home and in the diaspora, not to relent in thanking Mr. President in advance. Ijebu-Remo State is a must; we must achieve this together,” he declared.

The programme was widely seen as both a consolidation of grassroots support and a renewed call for unity among Ijebu and Remo people toward achieving state creation.
