… calls for restriction of container trucks to ojuelegba under bridge passage

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila has described as unfortunate the killing of eight people by a container in the Ojuelegba area of Surulere, Lagos on Sunday.

Hon. Gbajabiamila said that he received the news of the falling of the 20-foot container on a commercial minibus popularly known as Korope with anger and was pained that innocent people lost their lives in such a way.

The speaker praised the swift efforts of the officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), FRSC, police and others in evacuating the victims and rescuing one person.

Gbajabiamila called for immediate action and an investigation into the incident.

“I was saddened and shocked by the news of the murder of eight innocent people by a container. I became more heartbroken when I saw the gory footage of the incident. This is regrettable and unacceptable.

“This is not the first time such an incident has happened in Lagos. I therefore call for the immediate temporary installation of barriers as in the case of Oba Akran – computer village, Ikeja to prevent trailers from using the bridge and being forced to use the lower bridge as an alternative to prevent future events. It is unacceptable for people to die multiple times in the same place like this,” Gbajabiamila said.

The speaker said such an unfortunate incident was one of the reasons he sponsored the Federal Highway (Amendment) Bill, which, among other things, provided for locking containers and access to container trucks on airlifts for limited hours only and harsher penalties for those found innocent Killing Nigerians on the road.

Speaker Gbajabiamila sent his sincere condolences to the victims’ families, the people of his constituency, Surulere, and the Lagos government.

He prayed to God to give their souls peace and give their families the strength to bear the loss.
