Gateway International Airport Attains Nigeria’s First Aerodrome Operational Permit

The Gateway International Airport located in Ilisan-Iperu, Ogun State, has achieved a groundbreaking feat in the nation’s aviation industry as it becomes the first airport in Nigeria to secure an Aerodrome Operational Permit (AOP) from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The permit, which falls under the NCAA’s upgraded regulatory framework, affirms the facility’s compliance with international safety and operational standards, positioning it as a frontrunner in Nigeria’s expanding aviation landscape.

In addition to this milestone, the Instrument Landing System/Distance Measuring Equipment (ILS/DME) on Runway 23 has received full certification from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). Following a successful flight calibration exercise on September 4, 2025, the agency confirmed that the navigational equipment is “fully satisfactory in all aspects,” granting authorization for unrestricted use.

Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, described the double approvals as a testament to his administration’s commitment to turning Ogun State into a hub for trade, investment, and international connectivity.

“This success is not limited to Ogun State alone; it is a national milestone. The Gateway International Airport is now a benchmark for modern aviation infrastructure and a true representation of Nigeria’s progress in the global aviation sector,” Governor Abiodun stated.

With the certifications, the Gateway International Airport is expected to reshape aviation activities in Nigeria by ensuring safer, more reliable flight operations, offering direct access for agricultural exports to international markets, creating significant employment opportunities for young people, and easing the heavy traffic pressure on airports in Lagos.
