Fuel Price War: MRS Cuts Petrol Price To Compete With NNPCL

MRS Oil Nigeria Plc, a retail partner of Dangote Refinery, has in a move that underscores growing competition in Nigeria’s downstream oil sector slashed the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to ₦905 per litre, down from ₦945, in select filling stations across the country.
The price adjustment, which took effect on Sunday, July 6, is part of MRS’s strategic response to recent price shifts by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and other major fuel marketers. A statement posted on the company’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday confirmed the reduction.
Findings by our correspondent indicate that MRS stations in Kubwa and along the Lugbe Expressway in Abuja have already implemented the new price. The revision follows Dangote Refinery’s recent ex-depot price drop from ₦880 to ₦840 per litre, a development that has triggered a wave of price realignments in the sector.

As part of the nationwide adjustment, MRS is now selling petrol at:
₦885/litre in Lagos
₦895/litre across the South-West
₦915/litre in the South-East
Meanwhile, NNPCL has also revised its pump price in Abuja, bringing it down to ₦910 per litre from the previous ₦945.
These cuts offer temporary relief to motorists and households, particularly in Lagos and Abuja, where prices at MRS and NNPCL outlets now range between ₦885 and ₦910 per litre. However, as of Monday night, many independent marketers in Abuja continued selling petrol at between ₦940 and ₦945, suggesting that the industry-wide adjustment is still unfolding.
Industry analysts say the price competition signals a positive trend for consumers, though sustainability remains uncertain amid foreign exchange volatility and crude supply dynamics.
